Volunteer Focus: I wanted to update my skills

Gary Hancock, started working at Remploy in Trentham in 1987, when he was just 19 years old but lost his job there in 2012 when the company closed.

“On losing my job, I was seconded to a liaison officer from the Job Centre who was most helpful in trying to find further employment for myself. She contacted the DougieMac shop in Longton to see if there were any vacancies for me to carry out some volunteer work,” the 49 year old said.

“Luckily for me, there was such a vacancy so I started to help in February 2013 and have continued to help on two days each week, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10am until 12pm.

“I really love working here, the friendship is second to none and everybody helps each other. We know that we are all fulfilling a vital service so that people from this area who are suffering from a life limiting illness can continue to receive the care and support that they deserve,” Gary concluded.

If you’d like to join Gary in volunteering in any DougieMac shop across North Staffordshire, please e-mail volunteernow@dmhospice.org.uk.
