Corporate Support - Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept whereby organisations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations.

There is a legal obligation by companies to take responsibility for their impact on society and this can be best seen when organisations consider, for instance, their impact on the environment.

However, when we consider the obligations for an organisation to support a charity there are no legal obligations - instead organisations are voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large by supporting charities.

Of course there are benefits to organisations in aligning themselves with charities:

Cultural Identitiy
Giving employees a sense of, ‘belonging to’/’being part of’, and having pride in ‘their’ company, the way it operates and the work it does.

Staff Recruitment and Retention
Research has shown that companies with a strong identity where the workforce feel valued are seen as more preferable places of work. This means it is easier to retain staff and easier to attract them.

Team Building
Everyone is working together to support the voluntary objective. Fundraisers, such as outdoor pursuit challenges can reveal strengths previously unseen, and cement and create good working relationships.

Image
A company’s image can be greatly enhanced in the market place and as importantly to and by its own staff. Coupled with publictity opportunities, the company is positively promoted.
