Partnership Pays Off for the DMH
written by Faye Johnson
The Hanley Economic Building Society has been in partnership with the Douglas Macmillan Hospice for the past two years. Throughout this time, they have helped to raise considerable amounts of funding.
A majority of this money comes from their sponsorship of the Potters ‘Arf marathon, which has raised over £39,000 for the Hospice in the last 2 years.
Rob Hassall, Marketing and E-Commerce Manager from The Hanley, said: “Raising over £39,000 from just the Society alone would normally seem like a mammoth challenge, but by The Hanley supporting the Hospice indirectly, we can have direct results on their fundraising.”
The Society ran its voting process for their AGM recently. They donated 10p from each vote made in branch or by post, and 35p from each online vote to the Hospice.
To other local companies that are thinking of supporting the Hospice, Rob says: “The economic times mean we all have to dig deep, including businesses, but the way through this, and to continue the fundraising, is for us all to work together through local events to increase the Hospice’s fundraising.”
If, like The Hanley, your business would like to support the Douglas Macmillan, please do not hesitate to contact the Fundraising Team on: 01782 344304 or email.
Insurance Company helps DMH to boost donations
written by Faye Johnson
Autonet Insurance, based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, is the latest local company to pledge its support to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
For every van, household and car insurance policy that the company sells, it will donate £50, £30 and £25 respectively to the Hospice. These donations will not be added to the quote.
If your company would like to support the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in a similar way to Autonet Insurance, please contact the Fundraising Team on 01782 344304.
Local online clothing company, www.s-o-t-shirts.co.uk, are adding their name to the list of businesses that support the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

As well as showcasing local designers and their talents, the website also promotes Stoke-on-Trent and its heritage. This is highlighted in one of their lines of t-shirts, which have a range of phrases such as, “Ay Up Duck” and “Cos Kick A Bow?”
Matt Tomkinson from Burslem, who owns the company said: “It is a chance to rejuvenate the dialect and maybe introduce it to the younger public or visitors to this great city, in an attempt to prolong the usage and familiarity of the dialect.”
A £1 donation from the sale of these quirky t-shirts is being given to the Hospice.
Great idea by local company to support Douglas Macmillan Hospice
written by Faye Johnson
The Douglas Macmillan Hospice is being tickled pink by donations from hygiene company B Hygienic.
The new campaign, which is the brainchild of the company’s Managing Director, Vicki Allen, gives five pounds to cancer hospices and charities each time a pink bin is requested. The inspiration for the pink bins came from when Vicki’s close friend, who was also hr boss, died of ovarian cancer in 2007.
So far, the campaign has had positive feedback including support from celebrities such as Katie Price, Anthea Turner and Paula Radcliffe.
Vicki said: “I think it is such a different idea that whereas in the past people have been concerned with the aesthetics in a washroom, this is now giving them a new perspective and also creates a caring image.”
It is a health and safety requirement that sanitary disposal units are provided in washrooms. If your company is interested in joining the campaign, call B Hygienic on 01782 644788.
Wardell Armstrong take on the Three Peak Challenge!
On Saturday 15th August, a team of 27 people from environmental and engineering consultancy Wardell Armstrong took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
The team, consisting of 27 staff from the company had to endure treacherous weather conditions as it rained for eight hours of the twelve hour trek. This resulted in having to cross a swollen river (which was
apparently very amusing), flooded bogs and everyone getting a jolly good soaking!
Colin Brown, Managing Director of Wardell Armstrong, said: “We actually never even saw the three peaks because they were cloaked in mist virtually all day. With immaculate timing, the weather cleared in the early evening, which admittedly allowed a very pleasant time
recuperating outside at the Crown Inn in Horton-in-Ribblesdale after the event, accompanied by the medical administration of a few beers!”
A majority of the team finished the challenge, but there were a few non-finishers due to pulled muscles and tired knees. Some even took an ‘alternative’ route due to a navigational error at Pen-y-Ghent. The three lead ‘Mad Men’ completed the challenge in just nine hours, with the rest of the team finishing in approximately 12 hours.
So far, the group have exceeded their target of £2,000 and the money is continuing to come in. The Dougie Mac would like to thank everyone in the Wardell Armstrong team, not only for undertaking the Three Peaks
Challenge, but also raising this excellent amount of money for the Hospice.
