Volunteering

Volunteers have always been closely involved with the development of the hospice movement. Often the initial drive to open a hospice has come from the community, where friends have grouped together to raise awareness locally, to raise money and then to provide the staffing. This was the case with Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

At present we have a committed and enthusiastic team of more than 400 volunteers. They help in all areas inside and outside the Hospice, including:

• assisting in offices
• driving patients from home to the Hospice
• helping in patient areas
• helping out at fundraising events
• helping with preparing and serving food
• receptionist duties
• representing the Hospice at public presentations
• serving in our charity shops
• tending our attractive gardens

How you can help
We are always looking for more volunteers. By volunteering you can enjoy the pleasure of being part of a team, of making a difference, of lending a hand in your local community.  Volunteers work in most areas of the Hospice’s activities, which means that we can accommodate most skills, abilities and levels of commitment.

We provide training where required. Part of being one of volunteers is enjoying the social activities and regular outings that are available.
