Today marks the start of Student Volunteering Week which celebrates the positive impact of student volunteers on local charities.
The lovely Sharne is a wonderful example of one of our amazing Dougie Mac student volunteers. Here’s what she has to say…
“I consider myself to be a Student Ambassador for the charity day-to-day, but when I am available, which isn’t too often due to my busy school schedule, I spend time working in the Volunteer Resources offices completing admin tasks.
“I first became affiliated with the hospice last year in October when I completed my Work Experience with Sherry & the rest of the Volunteer Resources office, and I also spent some time with Alex & Ashvini in Media & Communications – both of which, I found incredibly interesting and a boost in my confidence for the future.
“I loved my time spent at the hospice so much that I was determined to contribute further in any way I could – hence why I enquired into volunteering. I really enjoy my time spent there; it’s such a community and there is so much love and laughter.
“I have since signed up to volunteering at three Dougie Mac events this year, and have even committed to raising money in the Dougie Mac 5K Run in April, for which I have already raised more than the £100 I pledged to.
“I am so grateful for the amazing opportunity Dougie Mac has laid before me. The kindness and respect I witness from everyone around me is astonishing; there is nowhere else like it.
“I hope to spend more time on the hospice grounds as my schedule frees up a little bit once I leave school in June – I just need to get those exams out of the way first!
“All I can say is thank you to everyone at the hospice for treating me like one of the team and for providing me with many great experiences… Here’s to plenty more!”
