Dougie Mac have been awarded a Britain in Bloom Certificate of Recognition by the Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom to congratulate our effort in contributing to creating a greener and happier community.
Our Gardening Team at Dougie Mac ensure the large hospice grounds provide a picturesque and peaceful environment for all to enjoy, including throughout the bitter winter weather and Covid-19 pandemic. Our patients enjoy spending time watching the colourful floral displays change and grow. The gardens also provide home-grown fruit and vegetables which are used to make delicious and nutritious meals here at the hospice.
Each year, Dougie Mac enters ‘Britain in Bloom’ and ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ two large horticultural competitions to showcase our horticultural excellence, environmental responsibility, and community participation. Sadly, in 2020 the competitions were cancelled due to on-going Covid-19 restrictions. However the RHS and Bloom Regions and Nations were moved by local stories of courage, creativity to support communities though this difficult time and felt it vital to recognise the important work done in 2020.
The Royal Horticultural Society commented: “This year an amazing sense of community spirit has enabled people to face the difficulties of this dreadful pandemic together. Through Bloom, It’s Your Neighbourhood, and other community gardening activities you have laid the strong foundations that helped make your communities more resilient in these testing times. We know that people have felt closer to nature through lockdown and valued access to green space so much more, and we have heard that people are valuing your work more than ever before.”
Vicki Stephenson, Gardening Co-ordinator at Dougie Mac was delighted to receive the certificate to recognise the teams efforts: “While everyone was of course disappointed that the In Bloom and It’s your Neighbourhood judging was not able to take place this year, the RHS and In Bloom community stayed strong and in touch. Our team of gardening volunteers have continued to work so hard throughout the pandemic so it was a lovely surprise to receive our certificate.”
Congratulations to Vicki and the team-wonderful recognition for your fantastic work in 2020!
