Bev Alaimo and her two daughters, Victoria Bradbury and Francesca Leonard pledged to raise £2,020 for Dougie Mac during 2020 in thanks for the care given to several family members over the years.
Victoria suggested a Facebook virtual market group, allowing independent business owners to promote and sell their products. The popularity of the market, online raffles and quizzes quickly generated £2420.
Inspired by her love of reading, Victoria also organised an Usborne Book raffle & sponsored book read raising £340.
Bev said: “The market and book raffle have been great to bring the community together. Local people supporting local businesses supporting a local charity – it’s just been perfect. Dougie Mac looked after my Nan incredibly well and we just had to do something to say thank you for the wonderful care and support.”
Shortly after exceeding their fundraising goal, Bev received the phone call we all hope for – she’d won the top prize in the weekly Dougie Mac lottery. As a lottery player since 2016, Bev was overjoyed and immediately offered to donate a proportion of her £2,000 winnings back to the hospice.
“I couldn’t believe it, it was such an unexpected surprise. I’ve played the lottery for a number of years but never expected to win. I decided to donate £500 back to Dougie Mac and include this in our year of fundraising donation. We hope our £3,260 donation enables the hospice continue its great work. We are so grateful for everything they did for my nan and our family.”
Bev, Victoria and Francesca are looking forward to another year of fundraising as the Virtual Market launches for Easter gifts and treats. If you’d like to join the growing group of virtual market members visit Virtual Market – Dougie Mac on Facebook.
