The Carer & Patient Support Service provides support and encouragement for patients and their carers and family members known to the Dougie Mac Hospice.
We help carers and families have a voice.
This service helps to signpost carers to the right support and guidance to obtain the help needed to continue in the caring role. To make a referral to the Carer and Patient Support Service, please speak to Pat Hamilton.
A referral to the service can be made by either the patient or the carer / family member, internally or externally by a healthcare professional. Referrals will only be accepted if the patient and carer have agreed to access the service. Once a referral has been made, our Carer and Patient Support Service will make a visit to your home to signpost to assess suitability for support services offered by Dougie Mac or the local community.
Once information has been gathered, the Carer & Patient Support Service will analyse the needs of the patient or carer / family member and create the best package for them. This can include financial support via application for grants or assessments, referral to services within the locality, or allocation of a Dougie Mac buddy.
A Dougie Mac Buddy offers emotional support and companionship to patients as well as giving carers the freedom to enjoy some much-needed ‘me time’. They also help with light housework including gardening, laundry, ironing and cooking meals. Buddies can be asked to drive people to medical appointments, take them shopping or out for a coffee.
Anyone who has a bit of free time and is happy to help with general household tasks or provide companionship is encouraged to consider becoming a Buddy.
Buddies do not offer clinical, medical or personal care and are not responsible for administering medication. They need to be aged 21 or over and are given training before starting their role with ongoing support also available.
For more information please call Pat Hamilton, who coordinates the Buddies, on 01782 344300 or 07975 997188.
The Carer & Family Support Group is for anyone caring for someone with a life-limiting illness who is receiving support from the hospice.
The aim of the group will provide the opportunity for carers and families to talk about their own needs, and offer practical information and support. It will present an opportunity to unwind with the chance to meet other carers and share concerns and feelings as well as suggestions for improvements for the hospice and its services.
The group meets fortnightly at the hospice. Please call Carers Co-ordinator, Pat Hamilton, on 01782 344300 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
